Selling plans let you offer subscriptions and prepaid deliveries alongside one-time purchases. Add the Selling plan element from Insert → Shopify → Variant — it sits next to the Basic, Dropdown, Color picker, and Custom variant pickers.
When to use it
Use Selling plan on a product that has selling plan groups configured in Shopify (through Shopify Subscriptions or a compatible app). Because Instant reads Shopify's selling plan groups directly, subscriptions work natively — with Shopify Subscriptions and virtually any subscription app that uses selling plans, including popular apps like Recharge, Loop, Skio, and Appstle — and don't need an app embed or widget. The element lists the available plans — for example, a one-time purchase next to a recurring delivery — and applies the shopper's choice to the product form before they add to cart.
Place it near your variant pickers and buy box so the selected plan is in place when the shopper adds to cart or checks out.
Set it up
Insert Selling plan on a product template or inside a container that has Shopify content connected.
Connect it to a product that has selling plan groups in Shopify.
In the Design panel, adjust how each option displays and style it to match your other pickers.
The preset comes with a One time purchase option and a subscription option, each of which you can restyle in Layouts & layers.
Drive selection with actions
For card-style selectors, add a Select selling plan action to a Button or Text element so clicking it picks a specific plan.
Select selling plan actions run on the main product context. Like Select variant option, they aren't available inside a Repeat on product repeater, so build subscription controls on the product layer rather than inside a repeated card.
Set a default plan for the whole template (First available selling plan)
On a product template, you can set which plan is selected by default when a shopper lands on the page — without hardcoding a specific plan. Select the template's root layer (the product context) and open its Shopify content in the Design panel. When the connected product has selling plan groups, a selling-plan dropdown appears with two choices:
One time purchase — the page defaults to a one-time purchase; shoppers opt into a subscription themselves.
First available selling plan — the page defaults to the product's first available plan, encouraging subscription by default.
First available selling plan is the key option for reusable templates. Instead of pointing at one specific plan (like "Deliver every 30 days"), it resolves at runtime to whatever the current product and variant's first plan is. That means a single product template works across a whole catalog even when each product has different subscription plans — and it keeps working if you switch subscription apps or rename plans. When the shopper changes variant, Instant automatically falls back to the first plan available for the new variant.
This setting is only on the product template's root product context. It doesn't appear on the individual Selling plan element, in Select selling plan actions, or in nested product overrides — those still use one-time or specific named plans.
Price and checkout
Connected Price elements reflect the selected plan's pricing, and add-to-cart and checkout actions include the chosen plan in the line item sent to Shopify. Test each plan your store offers, especially plans with different billing intervals.
Hide it when there are no plans
Use conditional visibility to hide Selling plan for products without selling plan groups, so one product template can serve both subscription and non-subscription products.
