Shopify metafields store custom data on products, collections, variants, and other resources. Instant reads your store's metafield definitions so you can use them in layouts without code.
How definitions load
When your store is connected, Instant loads your metafield definitions and shows the matching ones wherever metafields apply. Create or update definitions in Shopify admin; the definition's owner type (product, collection, and so on) determines where the metafield appears in the builder.
A metafield definition must have Storefront API access enabled in Shopify for Instant to read it. In the definition's settings in Shopify admin, turn on Storefront access (expose the metafield to the Storefront API). Without it, the metafield won't appear in the builder.
Text from metafields
Select a text element, open Content, and open the Dynamic content popover. Text-based metafields appear in the list when the connected Shopify content matches the metafield's owner type. Each option previews the value from your preview resource.
Images from metafields
File-reference metafields that resolve to an image appear as dynamic image options, labeled by the metafield's name. Pick one when setting an image element or an image Fill. Use these for size guides, alternate angles, or certification badges.
Metafield links
Metafields typed as URL or link can drive an element's link. In the interaction controls, use the URL-metafield control to connect one. If none are available, the control notes No URL Metafields defined in Shopify. See Interactions and animations.
Conditional visibility with metafields
On the Settings tab, add a Conditional visibility rule with the Metafield type, then pick the metafield and a comparison value. The available operators depend on the metafield's type. Metafield conditions need a product context — the same nesting rules as other product conditions. See Conditional visibility.
If a metafield doesn't appear
Confirm the definition exists in Shopify for the correct owner type.
Confirm Storefront access is enabled on the definition in Shopify, so it's exposed to the Storefront API.
Make sure the element is inside connected Shopify content for that resource type.
Check that the metafield's type is supported by the control you're using.
An empty preview usually means your preview resource has no value for that metafield — populate it in Shopify admin or switch to a resource that has data.
