Project members and roles

Understand Owner, Admin, and Editor roles on a project, invite collaborators, resend invites, transfer ownership, and manage team access.

Every Instant project has its own member list. Members control who can edit the storefront and change project settings.

Roles on a project

Role

What they can do

Owner

Full control, including transferring ownership. One owner per project. In the role menu: "Can manage settings".

Admin

Manage project settings, members, and team access. In the role menu: "Can manage project & team".

Editor

Build and edit layouts in the builder. In the role menu: "Can create in the builder".

Only Owners and Admins can invite members or change roles.

Open project members

  1. Open the project in the builder.

  2. Go to Settings → Members in the settings sidebar.

Invite people

  1. On the Members page, click Invite people.

  2. Enter one or more email addresses, separated by commas (maximum 10 at a time).

  3. Choose a role—Admin or Editor. (The owner is not assigned through invites.)

  4. Click Send invite.

Invitees receive an email to join the project. Until they accept, their row shows an Invite pending badge.

Resend an invite

If someone has not accepted yet:

  1. On the Members page, open the menu on their row.

  2. Click Resend invite.

If you resend too soon, Instant asks you to retry after a short cooldown.

Change a member's role

  1. Click the role dropdown on a member's row (for example Editor).

  2. Choose Admin or Editor.

The owner's role cannot be changed from this dropdown. To make someone else the owner, use transfer ownership (below).

Transfer ownership

To make someone else the project owner:

  1. On the Members page, open the role dropdown for that member.

  2. Select Owner ("Can manage settings").

  3. In the Transfer ownership dialog, type the project slug exactly as shown to confirm.

  4. Click Transfer ownership.

You become an Admin after transferring, and this action cannot be undone. The new owner must have accepted their invite before you can transfer ownership to them.

Remove a member

  1. Open the menu on the member's row.

  2. Click Remove from project.

Members who are not the owner can also choose Leave from their own row menu.

Team access on a project

When a project belongs to a team, a row appears for Anyone in [team name]. This represents the team's shared access to the project.

From that row you can:

  • Change the team's role on the project (Admin or Editor).

  • Remove from project to detach the project from the team (the same result as Remove project from team in General settings).

Team access grants the team as a whole a role on the project, while direct invites add specific people to the project member list. See Team members and roles.
