Product page templates control how individual product detail pages look on your storefront. Instead of your theme's default product template, you design a custom layout in Instant with full control over images, descriptions, buy buttons, and supporting content.
Create a product page template
In Layouts & layers, click + and choose Product page — or open the Add layout menu. Instant asks how you'd like to start: build with Instant AI (describe what you want and the Agent generates it), pick a starting point from the Template Library under the Product tab, or start from a blank canvas.
Build your template with product-specific elements from the Insert panel — such as the product title, price, variant selector, add-to-cart button, and media gallery.
Publish the template
Product data and assignments come from Shopify, so you publish the template before assigning products:
Select the product page template in Layouts & layers.
Click Publish in the header bar.
If prompted, enable Instant Embed so product data, variant selection, and cart actions work on the live storefront.
Assign products
After publishing, open Template settings with the gear icon next to the layout name in the top header (the panel opens as Product template settings) and go to the General tab. Under Products:
Search for the products that should use this template.
Select them.
Click Assign products.
You can assign an unlimited number of products to one template. Assigned products show an indicator; to move a product to a different template, assign it there instead. If you open this section before publishing, Instant shows Publish this template first.
Set as default template
On the General tab, use Set as default template to make this template the fallback for any product without a specific assignment. This is useful when most of your catalog shares one design and only a few products need custom layouts.
Plan availability
Publishing product page templates requires the Starter plan or higher — on the Free plan the Product pages group shows a Starter badge and prompts you to upgrade. Product page and collection templates share one combined publish limit (your plan's reusable templates):
Plan | Reusable templates (product + collection) |
Starter | 3 |
Pro | 5 |
Business | 10 |
On the Free plan you can design and preview product templates but cannot publish them. Check Settings → Plans for your account's limits.
Dynamic product data
Product templates pull live data from Shopify — titles, prices, images, variants, and inventory update automatically. You do not need to republish when product details change in Shopify. Republish only when you change the template design itself.
Subscriptions
If your products use Shopify selling plans, you can set a subscription default for the whole template — including First available selling plan, which defaults to each product's first plan so one template works across products with different plans. See Selling plans and subscriptions.
Working with multiple templates
Use one default template for your whole catalog, with custom templates for flagship products.
Create category-specific templates and assign the relevant products to each.
Keep the variant selector and add-to-cart button in every product template — they are essential for purchases.
