Publishing deploys your layout to Shopify, but a few follow-up actions make sure it works as intended on the storefront.
Confirm the publish succeeded
Once publishing finishes, the header Publish menu shows Published {time} instead of Not published. On a layout's first publish, Instant also shows a success screen with the most relevant next step for that layout type.
The publish menu offers quick actions that depend on the layout type:
Open theme editor — jumps to Shopify's theme editor (available for every published layout).
View live page — opens the layout on your storefront, for pages and blog posts.
Assign products / Assign collections — for product and collection templates.
Set as default — for carts, headers, and footers.
Open your published pages and blog posts with View live page and check content, images, links, and responsive behavior on desktop and mobile.
Instant Embed
Instant pages and sections are faster with Instant Embed enabled on your theme. Instant checks for the embed during publish and prompts you if it's missing — enable it from that prompt, or in your Shopify theme editor under App embeds (Shopify's own label), then republish if needed.
Without Instant Embed, pages can load slower and dynamic features may not work reliably.
Set defaults and assignments
Depending on the layout type, finish the setup in the layout's settings:

For product and collection templates, publishing deploys the design but doesn't apply it to products on its own. Open the layout's settings General tab and assign the products or collections that should use the template — assignment takes effect without republishing.
Share and test
Send the live URL to teammates for review.
Test the purchase flow on product templates — select variants, add to cart, and complete checkout.
Test cart layouts by adding items and opening the cart.
Check the layout on real mobile devices, not just the builder preview.

When to republish
Republish after you change a layout's design in Instant — content, styling, or structure. You don't need to republish for:
Product titles, prices, or inventory (Shopify data updates automatically)
Assigning or unassigning products and collections
Setting or changing defaults such as the home page or main header
Monitor after launch
Check your analytics for the new page or template after a few days.
Use Version history if you need to revert a post-publish edit.
Republish all layouts
If you changed your target theme or need a full resync, go to Settings → Shopify → Published layouts → Republish all. This redeploys every published layout to the currently selected theme.
